Farm History

M & R Farms in Johnsburg, NY was created in 1997 as a partnership between Mike O’Mealy of Rye, NY and Rick Ross of Johnsburg, NY. Their main venture at the time was to raise beef cattle on their farms, which consist of approximately 600 total acres of rural Adirondack land. At one time, their stock total reached about 80 head of Angus/Hereford crossed beef.

However, the business partnership between The Ross’s and O’Mealy’s dates back nearly 24 years. Over those years, the two have raised many different types of animals including; hogs, cows and several types of horses. At one time they even owned and bred rare draft horses on their farms and were known as Crane Mountain Shires.

Currently, the Farms have mianture horses, guinea hens and even several peacocks, but as of 2002, Mike and Rick turned their focus to more exotic livestock. For the past 8 years, the Farms have been raising fallow and sika deer, as well as, Mouflon and Aoudad sheep. The newest addition to the farm is a small herd of Texas Dall Sheep, but with many spring lambs, the herd is growing quickly! At the present, M&R has almost 200 head of deer and sheep and that number continues to grow each year. For now, the main goal of M&R Farms is to raise a herd large enough to sustain the sale of stock as meat, for hunting trophies and perhaps antler production. In the future, a portion of the Farms property may even be transformed into a shooting preserve, so that sportsman can enjoy hunting these magnificant animals.

Meet the Owners

Mike O'Mealy and his wife Jeanne currently live full time in Rye, NY. However, many years ago, their love for the rural Adirondack Mountains led them to purchase a beautiful 300+ acre farm in Garnet Lake, NY, which they visit as often as possible. It was in this rural section of Up State New York, that they first met Rick and Pam Ross and a partnership was born.

Rick and Pam Ross own the second piece of M & R Farms, several miles away in neighboring Johnsburg, NY. Theirs is actually the center for most of the current farming activities and where the deer, sheep are currently being raised. Through the years, the Ross family has farmed and raised many different animals and they will continue to do so, even though they are one of the only working farms left in Warren County. The Ross's always welcome visitors, including children from local schools to come and tour their farm or to learn about the animals.
